They're taking the time to give us a flashback about her past they could at least mention how she obtained one. Devil fruit powers are supposed to be rare but this 6 year old kid with no parents and few friends ate one.

She's shunned partly because of her powers but not because of how she got the powers. Therefore how she got them doesn't matter. It shows that she had them from a young age which is the only slightly important detail of it because it helps to add to her loneliness.
It's very rare for a tv show to portray a character using the bathroom. That's because showing it rarely adds anything to the story.

What does the bathroom have to do with anything? What is common is origin stories. Like the origin of Robin's loneliness and one part of it being left untouched.

We know that devil fruit powers are gained when someone eats them, so showing how she came across the fruit wouldn't help anything. If it doesn't add anything to the story, what reason does Oda have to add it to the manga?

They are not rare in the grand line everywhere else they are very rare! Just remember we only came across 4 devil fruit users in the east blue so far(luffy, Buggy, smoker and Alvida) whereas there were more than 20 in alabasta itself!
